Description of Resource
Smiles for Life is a comprehensive oral health curriculum for primary care clinicians initially developed in 2005 by the STFM Group on Oral Health. A second edition was released in July 2008 and a web-based third edition was released in July 2010. Originally designed to be implemented in residencies or medical school pre-doctoral programs, Smiles for Life has evolved into the nation's most comprehensive and widely used oral health curriculum for medical clinicians. Smiles for Life was recognized by STFM with its 2007 Innovative Program Award. Curricular components of the first edition were downloaded for educational use 47,384 times, and the second edition over 70,000 times. The Smiles for Life curriculum is based on seven 45 minute PowerPoint modules covering core areas of oral health; Module 1: The relationship of oral to systemic health; Module 2: Child oral health; Module 3: Adult oral health; Module 4: Acute dental problems; Module 5: Oral Health and the Pregnant Patient; Module 6: Fluoride Varnish; and Module 7: The oral examination. Each slide is fully annotated with speaker notes and relevant references. Also included with the curriculum are a comprehensive set of educational objectives based on the ACGME competencies, test questions, resources for further learning, and an implementation guide which includes a detailed outline of the modules. Pocket cards and PDA applications summarizing key point-of-care information on child oral health, adult oral health, and dental emergencies are also available. Patient education posters in English and Spanish suitable for exam or waiting room display may also be downloaded.
