Description of Resource
|
| |
Faculty need to master complex skills to thrive in academic medicine today. Yet resources for faculty development are limited, necessitating that efforts must be sharply honed towards the greatest individual and organizational needs. Therefore a user-friendly but thorough and sensitive needs assessment must be conducted to base efforts in evidence. This resource is one example of a needs assessment survey used in an academic family medicine department to assess perceived knowledge and skill in the domains of teaching, scholarship, and executive skills. The survey had two forms, a faculty self-assessment version and a version to gather division directors' and Chair perceptions of faculty. The instrument was also sensitive to years of experience in academic medicine and perceptions of priority for self and the department as a whole. |

This instrument can be used for 1) understanding faculty self-assessments of knowledge and skills; 2) understanding perceptions of department leaders regarding faculty needs; 3) for understanding perceptions of priority areas to address in faculty development programs; and 4) for observing differences of opinions between faculty self-assessments and leader perceptions, and differences between priorities for self and department. |
